Cafes in renovated Kyoto machiya in Nishijin, where you can spend a quiet hour.
In a town where the looms have fallen quiet
Nishijin, in western Kyoto, flourished as a textile district after the Onin War. Lattice-fronted machiya still dot the area, and cafes have grown up in machiya once left vacant. A little off the tourist routes, it is a place to spend a quiet hour. This article introduces three machiya cafes in Nishijin.
A book cafe in a former Nishijin weaving workshop — Cafe 1001
Cafe 1001 is a book cafe in the area around Senbon-dori and Ichijo-dori. It occupies a Kyoto machiya built in the late Meiji era, once a Nishijin weaving workshop. Earthen floors, a storehouse, and mud walls remain from that time, and more than 2,000 books on music, film, cats, and more line the shelves. With coffee from Cafe Kosen and homemade sweets, it is a hideaway for spending time quietly.
A machiya cafe overlooking a courtyard garden — cafe origi
cafe origi is a Kyoto machiya cafe in the Chiekoin-Sasayacho area. Set in a long-vacant Nishijin machiya renovated and opened in 2021, it lets you relax looking out over a tsubo-niwa courtyard garden. It serves Circus Coffee blends, original herbal teas, and a matcha kokedama parfait. A soft-serve figure at the entrance marks the spot.
A former weaver's machiya, house-made koji bread — CAFE FROSCH
CAFE FROSCH is a cafe in front of Shoran Park on Shichihonmatsu-dori at Itsutsuji. Set in a weaver's Kyoto machiya — once filled with the sound of looms — renovated and opened in 2009, it has a calm air with something of a faraway-travel feeling. Its signature "koji bread plate" stars a chewy, gently sweet bread fermented with live natural yeast (raw koji). Closed Thursdays and Fridays.

Before you go
All three are small machiya cafes in residential areas, with limited seating and closing days that differ by shop; some do not take reservations. Quieter weekday hours are easiest for a relaxed visit. Check each shop's official site, social media, or Google Maps for hours and closing days.
